Emily Steinhoff James poured her heart into everything she did. She served her country with pride as an Army veteran, stood up for others as a public defender, and brought her sense of purpose into every corner of her life. After earning her law degree from UNC Chapel Hill, she began her legal career in South Dakota, advocating for those who needed a voice. Years earlier, both her brother and sister had moved from South Dakota to North Carolina because of Emily. She later moved back to North Carolina to be near them.
Her dedication extended far beyond the courtroom. Emily was a creative spirit who played a vibrant role in the Raleigh arts scene, both on stage and behind the scenes at Raleigh Little Theatre. She had a gift for connecting people, creating beauty, and building community through her passion for performance.
Above all else, Emily loved deeply. She was a devoted mother, and Miles is now growing up without the person who meant the world to him. She would have championed him through every stage of life. The loss of that bond is profound—one no child should have to face.
Emily was someone people looked up to. She listened without judgment, offered steady guidance, and lifted others up with encouragement and humor. Her presence brought comfort, her words carried weight, and her support never wavered.
She was someone who loved with her words. Her messages, texts, and social media comments were filled with affirmation, kindness, and care. We are grateful to have those words to hold onto. They continue to speak life, comfort, and connection even in her absence.
What Emily gave to others lives on in the way she made people feel seen, in the warmth of her words, and in the countless lives she touched with her generosity.
